Old iron shops, new art cafes. The shift happens in the alleys.

Why MULLAE, why now

Mullae-dong is trending hard this June as the MZ generation's new favorite, with Harper's Bazaar Korea and Esquire Korea covering converted-factory cafes that are topping Naver reservation charts and described as hotter than Euljiro.

1. Baeg-Ya

Baeg-Ya opens the route because you want the rooftop before the crowd finds it. The category is cafe, the vibe is second-floor perch over the alleys. It's a quieter start, which matters when the next stop runs louder.

Crew's note

Rooftop's empty this hour. That's why we came now.

What visitors say

It was nice to be quiet, but it gets crowded after 8 p.m. The coffee flavor varies depending on who makes it, so I'm lowering my rating. The…

After lunch, we visited Baekya, a cafe with a nice view overlooking the alleyways of Mullae-dong. The entrance can be misleading, but if you…

2. Waves

Waves closes the course because that's where the energy should land. The category is date spot, the format is beer and small plates, and it sits deep enough in the factory zone that getting here feels like the payoff. This is where the route should end, not where it should start.

Crew's note

문래동 doesn't look like this from outside. That's why I brought you.

What visitors say

Loved the spicy noodles and cool spot to have a quick lunch!

Cool place to get beer. You might wait for long time.

The walk between

The strip between them threads through the district's split personality: welding-shop roll-up doors next to gallery signage, rust and white paint on the same block. It's the shift the scout research mentioned, and you'll feel it by the second corner.

  • Hit Baeg-Ya in the early window, before the evening wave. The rooftop empties out mid-afternoon.
  • Waves has limited menu breadth but the platters are sized for sharing. Go with at least one other person or plan to take your time with smaller portions.

FAQ

How long should I expect to wait at Waves?
The spot runs popular, and waits can stretch during peak hours. If you're on a tight schedule, budget extra time or shift your arrival earlier.
Is the Baeg-Ya entrance easy to find?
The entrance reads a little misleading from street level. You'll need to climb a narrow staircase to reach the second-floor space, so keep an eye out for vertical signage.
